Hello friends! Today's post is brought to you by the letter "F," as in FAMILY. We love our family, and we love it even more when we get to play together. Here's a clip of our kids playing together.
May has been a wonderful month so far, filled with plenty of opportunities for some quality family time. This past weekend, we headed east to Spokane to run the annual Bloomsday race. For anyone not familiar with Bloomsday, it's a 12 kilometer race that takes you through the streets of Spokane (and some of the outskirts). It's a big deal for the city, with over 40,000 participants each year. Unlike most long distance races, it's not a fundraising event. It's really just an opportunity for Spokane to bring in some tourism and revenue into the city. According to the Bloomsday website, in 2004, the race brought in $9 million dollars for the city, and attracts some pretty serious runners, some from as far away as Kenya.
We in the Vinje-Bush family, however, are not that serious about running. Instead, we thought it was a good chance to spend some time together exercising, while still enjoying being outside. The weather that day was nice for the time of year, about 50 degrees F. The sun was out, the people were out, and everywhere was a general feeling of festiveness. Mira didn't really know what to make of it all, but she mainly slept as we carried her along on our backs. We ended up finishing the race in about two and a half hours (average time for runners is about an hour and fifteen minutes), but we were still very proud of completing the whole thing.
Friday of that weekend also happened to be my sister, Michelle's birthday, so we spent that night celebrating by eating nasi tumpeng (traditional Indonesian yellow rice) and angel food cake, topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. All of us, including Mira, thoroughly enjoyed the cake. (Thanks Mom!) The rest of the weekend was spent hanging out with my parents, Michelle, her boyfriend, Kofi, and their two dogs, Clancy and Juno.
As always, we love any excuse to get out and about and do something active. And to be able to do it with our family is an added bonus. As time goes by, we hope to have many more weekend excursions and adventures. Like they always say, a family that plays together, stays together. Keep on playing!
